Contemporary architecture is increasingly turning towards nature. Large glass surfaces, open floor plans, terraces and a direct connection with the surroundings are no longer just a design trend, but part of a wider desire for higher-quality living and a more pleasant experience of space.
This approach is not limited to modern residential buildings. It is increasingly present in hotels, office buildings and other architecturally demanding projects, where openness, light and a connection with the surroundings have a significant impact on how a space is experienced.
In this type of architecture, elements that provide the necessary safety without visually closing off the space become especially important. Glass railings, also known as glass balustrades, therefore play a special role: they create a protective boundary that is almost invisible, allowing the view to remain focused on the surroundings.
Less structure, more architecture
Minimalism remains one of the key trends in contemporary architecture. Clean lines, calm materials and as few visible structural elements as possible create a sense of order and visual harmony.
With glass railings, this look can be achieved with frameless systems without vertical posts. The glass can be point-fixed with stainless steel standoff fixings or installed in a floor-mounted aluminium U-channel, which can be fixed to the walking surface or to the front of the structure.
Especially in minimalist architectural projects, the railing does not become a dominant element. Instead, it gives way to the architecture, materials and view. This makes it suitable for modern homes as well as representative office and hotel interiors.
Transparency is not the only option
Although clear glass is the most common choice, a glass railing can also take on a different architectural role.
For maximum clarity and colour-neutral transparency, Optiwhite low-iron glass can be used, where the characteristic green tint of standard float glass is significantly reduced. Where greater privacy is required, satin-finished glass is a suitable choice, while grey or bronze-tinted glass can be used to integrate the railing more distinctly into the colour and material concept of the building.
A glass railing therefore does not necessarily have to be an almost invisible barrier. It can also become a carefully considered architectural element that responds to the façade, the interior and the overall character of the building.
Safety comes first
When it comes to railings, aesthetics must never take precedence over safety. At Šiško steklarstvo, we manufacture glass railings from toughened and laminated safety glass. For self-supporting systems, typical glass configurations are 8+8 mm or 10+10 mm, with the final composition determined according to the fixing method, dimensions and structural requirements of the project.
Laminated safety glass consists of several glass panes bonded together with an interlayer, which helps hold the fragments together in the event of breakage. This is why such a glass composition is particularly important for elements designed to provide fall protection.
Glass balustrades can be manufactured with or without a handrail, depending on the structural requirements, intended use and desired architectural appearance.
